Standards
EN 343 – Protection Against Rain
EN 343 is the standard for certifying protective clothing against foul weather. It measures the
waterproofness (X) and breathability (Y) of the garment. Each property is rated on a scale of
1 to 4, with higher numbers indicating better performance.
Waterproofness (X)
/Class 1 – Basic protection for light rain
/Class 2 – Moderate protection for general outdoor work
/Class 3 – High protection for prolonged exposure
/Class 4 – Maximum protection for severe weather and demanding work
Breathability (Y)
/Class 1 – Low breathability
/Class 2 – Moderate breathability
/Class 3 – Good breathability
/Class 4 – Highest breathability, ideal for high-exertion work
Example: EN 343:2019 4:4 > Maximum waterproof and breathable protection for the toughest conditions.
EN ISO 20471 – High Visibility Clothing
EN ISO 20471:2013 is the standard for high visibility clothing, designed to make the wearer visible in both
daylight and low-light conditions. It uses 昀氀uorescent fabric to enhance daytime visibility and retrore昀氀ective
tape for nighttime or low-light illumination. This standard superseded EN 471:2003.
Garments are divided into three classes based on the area of 昀氀uorescent and re昀氀ective materials:

RIS-3279-TOM (formerly GO/RT 3279):
This is the mandatory UK-speci昀椀c standard for high-visibility clothing on Network Rail infrastructure.
Colour: Only a speci昀椀c 昀氀uorescent orange material is permitted for the background fabric.
This is to avoid confusion with yellow or green train signals.
Minimum Coverage: Garments must meet at least Class 2 minimum material requirements of
the EN ISO 20471 standard.
Application: Applies to anyone working on or near the line, including engineers, contractors,
and trackside workers. Network Rail generally enforces a “Full Orange Policy”.
